Flute makers often use a burnishing method for expanding silver and gold headjoint tenons.
While most of this mandrel is tapered, our Flute Headjoint Fitting Mandrel is cylindrical at the area that supports the tenon. This presents a flat and cylindrical portion under the tenon over which you can burnish. Our JLS Double Handle Burnisher is a great burnisher for this!
Beyond the tenon area, there is a step up which creates a landing area for your burnisher. This is polished to eliminate marking your burnisher. The step also helps you avoid peening the end of the tenon.
This mandrel is short enough so that the head cork assembly doesn’t need to be removed while doing the fitting. The holding end of the tool is 1” in diameter and can fit most vices as well as our Flute Station tool holders.
As with all our JLS mandrels, this is made of stainless steel which is polished to maintain a great finish inside the headjoint while reducing maintenance that other metals require.
