Mandrels and Dent Bars

Flute makers usually use a burnishing method for expanding the head tenon. Our Flute Headjoint Fitting Mandrel is used to support the head tenon and is straight at that area. It tapers the rest of the inserted portion. Fits with head cork in place.

Repairman’s mandrel. Straight tapered (not parabolic). Excellent for dent removal and rounding. 14″ length, tapers from 5/8″ to 3/4″ over 10″ length.

Specially designed and manufactured by JLSmith at the request of the Jupiter Instrument Company, these stainless steel Jupiter Headjoint Mandrels have exactly the right radius and taper to make dent repair and sizing of the Jupiter 507 headjoint ultra-efficient. These mandrels are precision-milled and beautifully finished to make it easier than ever to get spectacular results.

Lifting dents out of flutes has never been easier! Each end has a particular radius and entry angle that will provide the power needed to lift even heavy-wall nickel silver tube dents.

There are a few options for holding the tool:

• JLS Flute Station – place in the 5/8″ hole of the V-Block Vise Column (included in Flute Station Base Kit) and secure with set screw.
• Original JLS Flute Station (discontinued) – hold with 5/8″ Stanchion Sleeve (discontinued).
• Hold in vice.

As with all our mandrels, these are made with appropriate geometry to a fine degree of precision, and carefully finished. The entry features a perfect radius for “raking” small dents. 24″ total length, tapering from 1″ to 1/2″.
