Plastic Shims offer an important advantage over paper shims in that they’re waterproof. This feature is especially important when using Straubinger pads or S2 hard-backing style pads. Unlike wrapped-felt pads, the outer diameter does not hug the wall of the pad cup to shield the underlying shim from moisture.

Plastic shims work best with a flat surface. If a pad cup’s interior surface has a curvature, then a pad stabilizer should be used.

A note on dimensions:

All shims are cut .003″ shy of their advertised outer diameter for ease of fit into the pad cup.

Paper:The most common material. Suitable for standard felt pads. Works with machined cups, stamped cups, or stabilizers.

Plastic:  Essential for pads using a machined base such as Straubinger. Unlike felt pads, machined base pads need an allowance (a gap) around the circumference of the pad, which can allow moisture to migrate to and swell up a paper shim. Plastic shims require a flat machined cup or a stabilizer, which provides a flat surface to shim from.
